The right side depicts the normal anatomy of the sinuses.  The left side shows the extent of the resection.

Removal of the uncinate process of the ethmoid bone allows resection of the anterior ethmoid air cells, with subsequent reestablishment of ventilation and drainage of the maxillary and frontal sinuses through their natural ostia.  Surgery is performed through the nostrils and thus, there are no external incisions.
