The Ghorayeb Curly Q's are made of stainless steel wire that allows bending and adjustment to suit the patient's size and surgeon's need. They exert enough tension to hold the mouth gag and prevent lateral rotation of the head. Adjustments are easily made by moving the Curly Q's laterally or along the cephalo-caudal axis of the body.
Traditionally, during tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, mouth gags have been suspended from Mayo trays. With the advent of automatic electric operating room tables, it has become dangerous to hook the mouth gag to the Mayo tray, since any accidental table movement, without unhooking the assembly, is capable of producing a cervical spine fracture. With the Curly Q's, the assembly moves in unison with the patient and operating table, without danger of injury to the patient's cervical spine.
